Protein Powders and Protein Bars that are Safe for Breastfeeding

One of the most common questions that I get asks which protein supplements I recommend. Before I continue on, I want to remind you that supplements are very unregulated under the FDA in the United States. Companies can make any statement or claims as to the what their products do, and even what their products are made of. Please consult with your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before you begin any new supplement.

Because of my busy schedule, I rely heavily on protein powders and protein bars in order to be able to eat on-the-go and eat enough protein to hit my daily requirement. I am still pumping breastmilk for my 14 month old, so I am very careful about the quality of my supplements. Even if I WASN'T lactating, I would still be very picky about the quality of my protein powder. In our home, we eat organic, grass-fed, and sustainable foods as often as possible.

Here are the brands that I prefer for my own use, taking into consideration price, quality of ingredients, and taste.

Protein Powders

Orgain Grass Fed Whey Protein Powder

This is a whey protein concentrate sourced from New Zealand grass-fed cows. It is sweetened with erythritol (a sugar alcohol) and Stevia.

It is just $17.73 with Amazon Subscribe and Save for the vanilla flavor

It's $26.95 for the chocolate flavor if you Subscribe and Save.

By the way, if you are unfamiliar with Subscribe and Save, it is a free auto-ship service offered to Amazon Prime members. You can totally purchase your item through Subscribe and Save to get the lower price and then cancel the auto-renew really easily. If you don't have Amazon Prime, you should, especially if you are a mom. It's a life saver with its free two-delivery (and sometimes same day delivery!), plus free TV programming and movies, the Amazon Now two-hour delivery service that's free with any $35 grocery purchase (you just pay a tip), and so much more.

If you can't consume whey protein because of a milk protein allergy (my first son had this, so I had to cut out dairy for a year), then I recommend the Orgain Vegan Protein Powder instead. It's free of soy protein, uses organic ingredients, and is sweetened with Erythritol, Stevia, and Monkfruit.

The macros on it are fantastic (110 calories, 0 fat, 2g carbs, and 22g protein), and the ingredients are pretty "clean". The protein is also sourced from lactose free, grass-fed cattle, and it's well-priced.

The vanilla flavor is $34.00 with Subscribe and Save

The chocolate flavor is $34.00 with Subscribe and Save

Protein Bars

I have tried nearly every protein bar on the market and there are many that I like and that I think are tasty. Just to keep things simple, I'm going to recommend my two favorite. Again, I'm taking into consideration flavor, quality of ingredients, and price.

My favorite dairy protein bar is FitJoy. It's GMO free, gluten free, comes in a variety of flavors, and is sweetened with Stevia. It is free of sugar alcohols and soy protein. I recommend starting with the variety pack to see which flavor you like the best.

RxBars are one of the "cleanest" protein bars available out there and they taste absolutely delicious. They are only sweetened by whole foods, so they're a bit higher on the fat and carb content relative to their protein content, but if you're looking for a Stevia or sugar-alcohol-free protein bar, this is my favorite to recommend. You get between 12-15g of protein per bar.

It's hard to find a vegan protein bar that has more than 15g of protein and that is also under 200 calories.

Vega makes the best ones, in my opinion, at the most reasonable price.

Vega Sport Bars have 15g of protein for 260 calories.

Vega Protein+ Snack Bars have 11g of protein for 200 calories.

Do you know of any protein supplements that would be good to recommend? Drop me a comment and share!
